The Early Years
Revolvers, Riot Guns, and The Beginning of the Patrol.
S&W .32/20 Hand Ejector
Model of 1905
Carried by Patrolman VanWagenen, the first Utah Patrolman killed in the line of duty. Removed from his coffin to deter grave robbers and donated back decades later.
S&W .44 Hand Ejector
2nd Model
The first factory-issued UHP firearms. Shipped in 1932 to Salt Lake Hardware, stamped "UTAH HIGHWAY PATROL" and numbered 1 to 12.
Winchester Model 97
"The Thumb Buster"
Notorious for pinching thumbs. Its lack of penetration during a 1938 shootout in Price Canyon directly led to the adoption of the .357 Magnum.
S&W Model 27
The .357 Magnum
The longest-serving handgun in UHP history. Adopted in 1938 to provide "more firepower." It evolved through several barrel lengths over decades.
Thompson Submachine Gun
M1928 / M1
Purchased in 1940, sold in the 70s, used in a crime, and recovered by the ATF. These legendary firearms found their way back home.
Modernization
The shift to Semi-Automatics and the War on Drugs.
Remington 870
Police Magnum
The workhorse of the Patrol. Variants included folding stocks for the cramped Ford Mustangs and pistol-grip breaching models for SERT.
Heckler & Koch P7-M13
9mm Semi Automatic
Utah was the only state agency to issue the P7-M13. A marvel of engineering, but rising costs and the 1994 Crime Bill doomed the program.
Heckler & Koch MP5
9mm Submachine Gun
Issued to SERT and Criminal Interdiction. Featured a select-fire switch for full-auto mode and early laser sights (cutting edge for 1988).
Beretta Cougar
Model 8040D
Chosen over the Glock to ensure "Double Action Only" safety. The heavy 8lb trigger pull was notorious among troopers.
M-14 Rifle
7.62 NATO
Obtained from the federal government for just $1 each. Served field troopers for 20 years before being returned to the DOD.
The Tactical Era
Standardization, Optics, and Modern Platforms (1999–Present).
Glock 22 / 23
The .40 Caliber Era
The official transition to Glock began in 2001. Uniformed officers carried the full-size G22, while investigators and administrators carried the compact G23 or sub-compact G27.
Colt LE6920 MP-B
5.56 Tactical Rifle
Issued in 2013 to modernize the patrol. These AR-15 style rifles, equipped with MagPul furniture and tactical lights, phased out the aging shotguns and M-14s.
Glock 17
Return to 9mm
In 2013, UHP moved back to 9mm. Advances in ammunition technology meant 9mm now offered excellent ballistics with less recoil and lower cost than the .40 caliber.
Glock 45 MOS
Reflex Sight System
The current standard. A "Crossover" design featuring a compact slide on a full-size frame, machined to accept a Holosun Enclosed Reflex sight for rapid target acquisition.
