Understanding safety inspection requirements, fees, and exemptions for private and commercial vehicles in Utah.

⚠️ Important Update As of January 1, 2018, a safety inspection is no longer required for most passenger vehicles to renew registration. However, all vehicles must still comply with state laws regarding equipment and safety standards while operating on Utah roads.

Vehicles That Still Require Inspection

Salvage Vehicles

Required to pass a Safety Inspection the first time only that it is registered as such.

Street-Legal ATVs

Must pass inspection the first time it is registered, and each time ownership changes.

Commercial Vehicles

Over 10,001 lbs (Interstate): Annual inspection.
Over 26,001 lbs (Intrastate): Annual inspection.
Under 26,001 lbs (Intrastate): Exempt.

All tow trucks: Annual Inspection See Utah Code 72-9-101

Buses & Taxis

Annual inspections required for School Buses, Buses/Vans for Hire, Taxis, Limousines, and Airport Transports.

All Tow Trucks

Per Utah Code 72-9-101 annual inspections are required.

3+ Axles & Heavy Towing

Vehicles with 3+ axles, or pulling trailers with multiple axles. (Standard pickups excluded).

☁️ Emissions Testing

Safety Inspection is separate from Emissions testing. Required in Cache, Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties.
