Citations & Court Information

I Received a Ticket

What do I do?
You must appear before or post bail with the court listed on your citation. This must be done not sooner than five days and not later than 14 days after receiving the ticket.

Warning: Failure to contact the court will result in a warrant for your arrest.

Lost Ticket or Missing Info?

The Utah Highway Patrol does not have a centralized database of citation information.

If you lost your ticket: Contact the UHP office for the area where you were stopped.

If the court doesn't have it yet: The agency has four days to file. If 5 days have passed, ask the court clerk to call the local UHP office to request a copy.

General Questions

How does the "Points" system work?

The points system is a part of Utah's Driver Improvement Program. Points are assigned for specific types of violations. Accumulating too many points can lead to suspension.

Looking for specific point values or how to clear your record?
Please visit the Driver License Division (DLD) for the most current details.

Can I go to Traffic Safety School to reduce the fine?

Traffic safety schools are established by individual government/court jurisdictions. Contact the court to which you were referred to ask if they have a program of this type.

Do I have to stop for an unmarked car?

Yes. Utah law requires that you stop for a vehicle displaying emergency lights or sounding a siren.

If you suspect an impersonator: Call dispatch immediately, ask for identification, and if unsafe, drive to a well-lit public area while calling 911.

Reporting reckless or aggressive driving

If a driver presents a significant risk, call 911. Provide the dispatcher with the vehicle description, license plate number, location, and direction of travel.

What if a truck drops rocks or breaks my windshield?

To Report: Call the agency with jurisdiction (UHP for Interstate). Provide location and truck description.

Damages: This is a civil matter. Document the incident and contact the trucking company directly to file a claim.

Questions about Trooper conduct

Complaints: Contact the UHP office in the area where you were stopped to speak with a supervisor.

Off-Duty Cars: Troopers are permitted to take cars home for 24-hour on-call readiness and to increase police presence.
