Utah Window Tint Requirements

Effective Date: May 7, 2025

Per Utah Code 41-6a-1635, the following light transmittance limits apply to vehicles operating on Utah highways.

Windshield

70%

Minimum Light Transmittance: The glass must allow more than 70% of light in.


Exceptions: Non-transparent material is allowed ONLY along the top edge (AS-1 line or top 4 inches) or in the lower left-hand corner (3x4 inch limit).

Front Side Windows

35%

Minimum Light Transmittance: Must allow at least 35% of light in.


Variance: A 5% variance is allowed when observed by a peace officer metering the light.

Rear Windows

Any

Non-transparent materials (darker tint) may be used on rear windows, including rear side windows located behind the operator.


Requirement: If rear windows are tinted, the vehicle must have both left and right-side rear-view mirrors.

Important Prohibitions & Requirements

  • No Metallic or Mirrored Tint: Any material that presents a metallic or mirrored appearance is strictly prohibited on any window.
  • Obstructions: No posters, signs, or hanging objects that materially obstruct the operator's view.
  • Wipers: Windshield wipers must be maintained in good working order.
  • Federal Standards: Vehicles subject to federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards must comply with federal tinting regulations.

Note: A violation of this section is legally classified as an infraction.
