How to Retrieve Your Vehicle
Do Not Go To The Impound Lot First
The tow yard cannot legally release your vehicle to you yet. In most cases, you must complete the two-step process below and obtain clearance from the DMV before the towing company is allowed to give you your car.
Visit the DMV
Go to a DMV office to pay any required fees and obtain a "Letter of Impound Release". You must have this document before the impound yard can release your car.
Go to Impound Lot
Take your release letter and ID to the towing company yard. You will then pay the towing/storage fees directly to them to get your car.
Specific Towing Scenarios
DUI Impounds (Driving Under the Influence)
Requirements for Release:
- Registered Owner: Only the registered owner can obtain the release.
- Impound Fee: You must pay an administrative impound fee (approx $400) to the DMV.
- Valid Registration: The vehicle must be properly registered. If expired, you must pay registration fees first.
Note: If the owner was not the driver, the administrative fee still applies.
Revoked Registration / No Insurance
If your vehicle was towed because of a revoked registration (usually due to lack of insurance):
- Reinstatement: You must pay the insurance reinstatement fee.
- Registration: You must pay all registration fees.
- Release: Once paid, the DMV will issue the Letter of Impound Release.
Abandoned Vehicles
If your vehicle was towed as "abandoned" (left on highway):
- Visit the DMV with your ID and proof of ownership.
- Obtain the Letter of Impound Release.
- Proceed to the impound yard to pay towing/storage fees.
Stolen Vehicle Recovery
If your vehicle was stolen and then recovered/towed:
- Fees Waived? The administrative impound fee is generally waived if the theft was reported.
- Procedure: You still need to visit the DMV to get the release paperwork before going to the yard.
- Storage Fees: You are typically responsible for towing and storage fees at the yard.
