New Station Requirements
The following conditions must be met before applications will be accepted for processing by this department.
A $10,000.00 Surety Bond or Garage Keeper's Insurance is required. The original Surety Bond will be placed on file with the department if the station does not opt for the Garage Keeper's Insurance.
- a. The original bond will not be accepted unless it is issued in the name of the business and signed by the business owner.
- b. The bond will remain on file with the department the entire length of time the business is in operation as an Official Safety Inspection Station.
A Station application fee of $300.00 is required before a station license will be issued.
A computer with Internet access for on-line inspections. A current Official Safety Inspection Manual must be purchased or download a copy from the Safety Inspection Web Site at uhp.utah.gov/safety-inspection.
Each inspector employed by the station must have a valid certification card to be posted at the station.
Passenger Vehicle and Light Truck stations must have a hoist, capable of lifting all four tires off of the ground simultaneously.
Proper hand tools and a workbench are required.
Building floor must be of concrete or asphalt and must be level.
Dial Indicator (for measuring play in ball joints and other suspension components).
Brake rotor drum gauges measuring to .001 of inches are required. For tractor/trailer/bus stations, a King Pin Gauge and a 5th Wheel jaw gauge are required. Drum gauges for tractor/trailer/bus stations must be large enough to measure largest drums (21").
Three brake lining thickness gauges are required:
- a. Bonded lining gauge.
- b. Riveted lining gauge.
- c. Disc pad lining gauge.
All three gauges must be capable of accurately measuring lining thickness in fraction of inches.
Tape Measure.
Headlight aiming method (mechanical headlamp aiming device, or, by checking light at 25 feet measured from the front of the vehicle to a wall).
NOTE: Stations with the "Computerized Plate Brake Tester" are required to have the above equipment in the event that the brake tester becomes nonfunctional they may return to pulling wheels rather than quit inspecting.
