Traffic Slow Downs
Why is that Trooper swerving?
It isn't a drunk driver—it's a safety maneuver.
You may see a Trooper driving slowly, swerving back and forth (serpentine), or straddling the lane divider with their lights on. We call this a "Traffic Slowdown."
This maneuver creates a temporary break in traffic to allow for safety up ahead. Troopers use this to:
- Remove dangerous debris from the roadway.
- Allow construction vehicles to safely enter a congested highway.
- Create a safety cushion for dignitary visits.
Usually, the situation is resolved in just 1 or 2 minutes.
What To Do When You See It
1
Stay Alert
Be aware of your surroundings immediately. Notice the emergency lights and the traffic pattern changing ahead of you.
2
Slow Down
Reduce your speed immediately. Do not rush up behind the patrol car. Prepare to stop if necessary.
3
Do Not Pass
Please be patient.
Do not attempt to pass the Trooper.
Wait for the officer to turn off their lights or pull to the side.
Traffic Slowdown Maneuver: The Trooper will weave across all lanes. Do not pass.
